How to Book Patente B Theory Exam at Motorizzazione
Step-by-step guide to booking your Patente B theory exam directly at the Motorizzazione Civile as a privatista candidate, including required documents and fees.
If you are studying for the Patente B as a privatista (self-study candidate), you book your theory exam directly with the Motorizzazione Civile. Here is the step-by-step process for 2026.
What You Need Before Booking
Before you can register as a privatista and book the theory exam, you must have:
- Medical certificate (certificato medico) — valid, issued by an authorised doctor within the past 6 months
- Italian residency (residenza) — you must be registered as a resident in an Italian municipality
- Fiscal code (codice fiscale)
- Valid identity document (passport or national ID)
- Permesso di soggiorno (if non-EU citizen)
Registration at the Motorizzazione
Unlike autoscuola candidates (whose school handles everything), privatisti must register directly:
- Go to your local Motorizzazione Civile office (UMC — Ufficio della Motorizzazione Civile)
- Submit a completed modulo TT2112 (theory exam registration form) — available at the office or downloadable from the MIT website
- Attach your medical certificate and a copy of your ID
- Pay the Bollettino postale (postal order) of ~€10–16 for the registration fee
- Receive your candidato privatista number
You must book in person or via certified mail (raccomandata); online booking is not universally available for privatisti at all offices.
Booking the Theory Exam Appointment
Once registered, exam slots are assigned based on availability:
- Major cities (Rome, Milan, Turin, Bologna): waiting times of 4–8 weeks
- Smaller provincial offices: often 2–4 weeks
You will receive a convocation letter (lettera di convocazione) with the date, time, and address. Keep this — you must bring it to the exam.
What to Bring on Exam Day
- Convocation letter
- Valid identity document (the one used for registration)
- No pens, phones, or notes allowed in the exam room
After Passing: Getting the Foglio Rosa
Once you pass, the Motorizzazione registers your result within a few days. You can then:
- Request your Foglio Rosa from the same office
- Find an autoscuola near you for the 6 mandatory practical hours
- Begin booking the practical exam through the autoscuola
What Happens if You Fail
Wait 30 days, then go back to the Motorizzazione to book again. No additional registration fee; same booking process.
Prepare Thoroughly Before Booking
With 4–8 week waiting times, book early — but only once you are consistently scoring 36+/40 in timed mock exams.
