Night Driving in Italy โ€” Rules, Limits & Safety Tips

Italy has specific rules for driving at night. Learn the lower speed limits, mandatory equipment, headlight rules, and how night driving is tested on the Patente B.

Driving at night in Italy isn't just about having your headlights on. There are specific speed limit reductions, equipment requirements, and behaviours that differ from daytime driving โ€” and they're tested in both the theory and practical exam.

Reduced Speed Limits at Night

On roads outside urban areas, speed limits are automatically reduced at night (between 22:00 and 06:00) for drivers who:

  • Hold a licence obtained less than 3 years ago, OR
  • Are under 21 years old
Road type Day limit Night limit (new drivers)
State roads (strade statali) 90 km/h 80 km/h
Motorways (autostrade) 130 km/h 100 km/h
Urban roads 50 km/h 50 km/h (no change)

Experienced drivers (licence 3+ years, age 21+) drive at the standard posted limits at night.

Mandatory Equipment and Lights

At night and in low-visibility conditions (fog, heavy rain, tunnels), you must use:

  • Low beam headlights (anabbaglianti) โ€” always at night on all roads
  • High beams (abbaglianti) โ€” permitted on unlit roads outside urban areas, but must be dipped for oncoming traffic and when following another vehicle
  • Rear fog lights (fendinebbia posteriori) โ€” only in genuine fog/heavy rain (visibility under 50m); leaving them on in clear conditions is an offence
  • Hazard lights โ€” only when stationary and creating a hazard, not while moving

Sidelights Are Not Enough

A very common mistake: driving on sidelights only (luci di posizione) is illegal at night on the move. Sidelights are only permitted when stationary.

Night Driving During the Foglio Rosa Phase

When you hold a Foglio Rosa, 2 of your 6 mandatory autoscuola hours must be driven at night. The instructor must certify this in your booklet. There is no way to skip the night requirement.

Practical Exam Night Requirement

Likewise, the practical examiner may require a portion of the exam to include a night or low-light segment โ€” particularly in winter months when exams run in the early evening.

Theory Exam Night Driving Questions

Common exam questions cover:

  • When to use high beams vs. low beams
  • When rear fog lights are mandatory vs. prohibited
  • Night speed limits for new drivers
  • What to do when meeting oncoming high-beam traffic (look right, slow down)
