They must be used with utmost moderation and only for the purposes of road safety.
They may be used outside urban areas whenever circumstances, always related to road safety, make it advisable in order to avoid accidents.
In urban areas, however, their use is generally prohibited, except in cases of immediate and actual danger, or when transporting seriously injured or ill persons.
It is furthermore prohibited:
in the presence of the specific sign (fig. 59);
in the vicinity of hospitals;
if there is no immediate danger.
