The directional arrows shown in the figure are located within the (pre-selection) lanes, before a junction.
They indicate to drivers the permitted directions at the junction:
lane A allows the driver to turn left only
lane B allows the driver to turn right or left
lane C allows the driver to turn right only
It is permitted to move into the chosen lane while the lines are still broken (dashed), whereas it is mandatory to follow the direction indicated by the arrow if the lane lines are continuous.
These may be supplemented by road surface markings indicating the destination.
Combined arrows may be used, for example, straight-right for lanes intended for those who must go straight ahead or turn right.
It is not true that lanes A, B, and C shown in the figure are for two-way traffic.
