Reaction time is defined as the time that elapses from the moment a hazardous situation is perceived until braking begins. Reaction time is usually approximately one second. Therefore, the distance travelled during the reaction time is the distance covered from the moment a hazardous situation is perceived until the onset of braking. This depends on the speed at which the vehicle is travelling. The distance travelled during the reaction time (e.g., one second) can be calculated: - by multiplying the speed by 1,000 (the number of metres in a kilometre) and dividing by 3,600 (the number of seconds in an hour), which is equivalent to multiplying by 10 and dividing by 36. - as an approximation, the speed can be divided by 10 and multiplied by 3. For example, in 1 second at a speed of 50 km/h, the distance covered is: - 50x10/36=13.889m using the first method - 50/10x3=15m using the second method (approximate)
