LIMB FRACTURES A fracture is the breaking of a bone; if the bone protrudes through the skin, it is known as an "open" fracture. The primary signs of a fracture are severe pain even with minimal movement of the limb, swelling and/or deformation of the injured part. The fracture must be immobilised in the position in which it is found to prevent injury to nerves and blood vessels and to minimise severe pain (which may lead to a state of shock). Immediately thereafter, if necessary, implement standard anti-shock measures. In the case of an open fracture, where the bone protrudes through the skin, the bone must not be pushed back in an attempt to return it to its position; instead, before immobilising the limb, the wound and the bone must be covered with sterile material or a clean cloth to prevent infection. Emergency services must always be awaited. It is not true that it is necessary to ask the victim to move their limbs or to make them walk to reduce the pain.
