Topic explanation
In a series of hairpin bends, it indicates the sequential number (not the total number, which may instead be indicated on the supplementary plate 'HAIRPIN BEND' in Figure 143 - see the chapter on supplementary plates).
It therefore indicates the proximity of a sharp and dangerous bend (hairpin bend).
It is not true that it indicates the distance in kilometres to the next hairpin bend.
