Winter Driving in Italy โ Snow Chains, Tyres & Rules
Italy requires winter tyres or snow chains on many roads from November to April. Learn the rules by region, the fines for non-compliance, and how to drive safely in winter.
Italy's winter driving regulations are some of the most specific in Europe. Failing to comply leads to fines and can invalidate your insurance. Here is what every driver needs to know.
The Obligation: Winter Tyres or Snow Chains
On roads marked with the M+S or winter tyre sign, you must either:
- Fit winter tyres (gomme invernali) โ tyres with a tread depth of at least 1.6mm and the M+S or 3PMSF snowflake symbol, OR
- Carry snow chains (catene da neve) and fit them when required
This obligation typically runs from 15 November to 15 April, though individual municipalities and mountain regions can extend the period.
Where the Obligation Applies
- Mountain roads (strade di montagna) โ mandatory season-long
- State roads in alpine regions โ mandatory or strongly advisory
- Urban roads โ only when a snow emergency is declared by the municipality
- Motorways โ carry chains even when not fitted; fit them if instructed by Autostrade operators
A red and white sign showing a tyre with chains icon (obbligo catene o pneumatici invernali) means both options are mandatory. A sign showing only chains means chains must be fitted if snow is present on the road surface.
Snow Chain Rules
When fitting snow chains:
- Fit on the driving wheels (front wheels for FWD, rear for RWD, all four for AWD ideally)
- Maximum speed with chains fitted: 50 km/h
- Remove chains as soon as the road is clear of snow and ice
Driving with chains on clear, dry asphalt damages both the chains and the road and is an offence.
Fines for Non-Compliance
| Offence | Fine |
|---|---|
| No winter tyres/chains on mandatory road | โฌ85โ340 |
| Insurance issues from non-compliance | Variable (insurer may reduce coverage) |
Tips for Driving in Snow and Ice
- Reduce speed well below limits โ legal speed is irrelevant if you cannot stop safely
- Double or triple following distance โ stopping distances increase dramatically on ice
- Accelerate and brake gently โ sudden inputs cause skidding
- Use engine braking โ downshift before corners rather than braking through them
- Headlights on โ mandatory in all reduced-visibility conditions
Theory Exam Questions on Winter Driving
The Patente B exam asks about:
- When snow chains are mandatory (sign recognition)
- Maximum speed with chains fitted (50 km/h)
- Stopping distance on wet vs. icy roads (can be 3โ5ร longer)
- Which tyres qualify as winter tyres
