Speed Cameras in Italy โ Types, Fines & How to Spot Them
Italy has Europe's densest speed camera network. Learn the different camera types, fine amounts, the tutor system, and what foreign drivers need to know.
Italy operates one of Europe's most extensive speed enforcement networks. Understanding the camera types and fine structure is essential both for safe driving and for the Patente B theory exam.
Types of Speed Cameras
1. Autovelox (Fixed Point Camera)
The most common type โ a roadside box that measures speed at a single point. Usually yellow or grey, often signposted 300m in advance with a warning sign (camera icon + speed limit).
2. Tutor / Safety Tutor (Average Speed)
Found on motorways (autostrade) and major roads. Two cameras measure the time you take to travel a known distance and calculate your average speed. You cannot slow down for one camera then speed up โ the entire stretch is monitored. Signs indicate the start and end of a Tutor zone.
3. Traffipax (Mobile Camera)
Police-operated mobile cameras, often in unmarked vehicles or from the roadside. No advance warning required by law, though many are signed. Primarily used on state roads and in urban areas.
4. Red Light + Speed Cameras
Combined units at traffic lights that detect both red-light running and speeding. Common in larger cities.
Fine Structure (2026)
| Excess speed | Fine |
|---|---|
| 1โ10 km/h over | โฌ42โ173 |
| 11โ40 km/h over | โฌ173โ695 |
| 41โ60 km/h over | โฌ543โ2,170 + licence suspension 1โ3 months |
| Over 60 km/h over | โฌ845โ3,382 + licence suspension 6โ12 months |
Night penalty (22:00โ07:00): fines increased by one-third for the same offences.
Repeat offence within 2 years: fines doubled + longer suspension.
Foreign Drivers and Speed Fines
Italy has cross-border enforcement agreements with most EU countries. If you drive a foreign-registered car and are caught by camera:
- The fine notice is sent to the registered address in your home country
- Non-payment can result in collection agency action or complications at borders
- EU drivers lose points on their home licence in many cases
Speed Camera Rules in the Theory Exam
Exam questions often ask:
- When is it mandatory to signal speed cameras in advance?
- What speed is permitted 50m before a school where you see a Tutor sign?
- What does the "Autovelox attivo" sign mean?
Know the signage and the fine thresholds โ both appear regularly.
