Patente B Renewal in Italy — How It Works (2026)

Italian driving licences don't last forever. The Patente B must be renewed periodically — the interval depends on your age. Here's everything you need to know.

Renewal Intervals by Age

Your licence shows the expiry date (scadenza) on the front. You can renew up to 6 months before the expiry without losing the remaining validity.

What the Renewal Involves

Renewing is simpler than getting the licence originally:

1. Medical visit (visita medica) — same vision and fitness check as for the first licence; costs €50–80 at an authorised centre
2. No theory or practical exam — you do not need to re-sit any test
3. Submit the medical certificate to the Motorizzazione, your autoscuola, or a CAF/Patronato

Where to Renew

• Autoscuola — the easiest option; they handle all the paperwork for a small fee (~€20–40)
• Motorizzazione Civile — direct submission; requires booking an appointment
• CAF or Patronato offices — free or low-cost administrative help; useful for foreigners

Renewing as a Foreigner (Non-EU)

If you hold an Italian Patente B obtained after converting a foreign licence or after passing the full Italian test, renewal follows the same process as for Italian citizens.

If you still hold a foreign licence and are living in Italy, you must convert it to an Italian licence within the 12-month rule (or immediately if your country has a bilateral agreement). You cannot renew a foreign licence through the Italian system.

What Happens if Your Licence Expires?

• You are not legally allowed to drive
• You can be fined €158–634 by police
• Driving with an expired licence can invalidate your car insurance
• You can still renew — there is no hard deadline for renewal after expiry, but you cannot drive until the new document is issued
