Patente B Mock Exam Strategy โ€” How to Use Practice Tests

Doing mock exams wrong wastes time. Learn how to use practice tests strategically to identify gaps, build speed, and enter the real Patente B exam with full confidence.

Most people use mock exams wrong: they take one, see their score, feel good or bad, then move on. Done strategically, mock exams are the single most powerful preparation tool available. Here is how to use them correctly.

Three Phases of Mock Exam Use

Phase 1 โ€” Diagnostic (Week 1)

Take 2โ€“3 timed mock exams at the very start of your preparation, before studying. This feels uncomfortable but gives you critical data:

  • Which topics do you already know well? (Don't waste time here)
  • Where are your gaps? (This is what to study)
  • How does test pressure feel? (Baseline for improvement)

Don't be discouraged by a low score here โ€” it's information, not a verdict.

Phase 2 โ€” Formative (Weeks 2โ€“6)

Take one timed mock exam per week throughout your preparation. After each one:

  1. Record your score in a simple log (date, score, main error category)
  2. Review every wrong answer โ€” don't just note it was wrong, understand why
  3. The next day, redo those specific questions from memory
  4. If you got the same question wrong twice: add it to a dedicated weak-list

Doing a mock exam without reviewing wrong answers is the most common mistake โ€” it gives you a score but no learning.

Phase 3 โ€” Performance (Week 7โ€“8)

In the final 2 weeks, increase to 2 timed mocks per day: one in the morning, one in the evening. Your goal is not to learn new material โ€” it's to build automaticity and reduce exam-day anxiety through familiarity.

Target scores:

  • Week 7: consistent 36โ€“37/40 (passing threshold is 36)
  • Week 8: consistent 38โ€“39/40 (buffer for exam-day nerves)

How to Set Up a Mock Exam Correctly

A mock exam only trains you for the real thing if the conditions match:

  • Timed strictly โ€” set a 30-minute timer and stop when it ends
  • No pausing โ€” no phone, no checking answers mid-exam
  • Same device type โ€” the real exam is on a desktop terminal; use the app's simulation mode which mimics the official interface
  • One attempt per sitting โ€” don't immediately retry; let the session reset overnight

What Score Means You Are Ready?

Score range Readiness
30โ€“33/40 Not ready โ€” more foundational study needed
34โ€“35/40 Close โ€” 1โ€“2 more weeks of targeted work
36โ€“37/40 Borderline โ€” consistent 36+ over 5+ tests before booking
38โ€“40/40 Ready โ€” book your exam

The key word is consistent โ€” one 38 doesn't mean you are ready. Five consecutive 38s does.

Using Error Analysis

Keep a simple spreadsheet or note:

Question topic Times wrong
Right of way at junctions 4
Speed limits tunnels 3
Parking near a junction 2

Any topic with 3+ errors needs targeted practice sessions, not just more mock exams.

Driving Freedom โ€” Built for This Strategy

The Driving Freedom app tracks your error patterns automatically, generates topically-targeted practice sessions, and includes a full simulation mode that matches the real exam interface.
