Failed the Patente B Theory Exam — What Happens Next?
Failing the Italian theory exam is more common than you think. Here's exactly what happens after a fail, how soon you can retake it, and how to pass next time.
Failing the Italian Patente B theory exam can feel discouraging — but it's extremely common. The national first-attempt pass rate hovers around 65–70%. Here's what happens next and how to ensure you pass the retake.
What Counts as a Fail?
The theory exam is 40 questions (true/false and multiple choice) with a 30-minute time limit. You fail if you make more than 4 errors. Even 5 errors means an immediate fail — there is no partial pass.
Common reasons for failing:
- Misreading image-based questions under time pressure
- Confusing similar-looking traffic signs
- Not knowing the exact legal thresholds (BAC, speed limits, stopping distances)
- Running out of time
Waiting Period Before Retaking
After a fail, you must wait a minimum of 30 days before you can sit the theory exam again. There is no limit on the number of attempts you can make, but each attempt costs a new booking fee.
For privatisti (self-study candidates), you book the retake directly at the Motorizzazione. For autoscuola candidates, your school re-books you.
Does a Fail Invalidate Anything?
No. A theory exam fail:
- Does not cancel your medical certificate (still valid for 6 months from issue)
- Does not affect your registration
- Does not reset any countdown — you simply wait 30 days and book again
What to Do Differently for the Retake
1. Identify your weak topics. Driving Freedom tracks which question categories you get wrong and automatically increases those in your practice sessions.
2. Do timed mock exams daily. Pressure in real conditions is different from casual studying. Take a full 40-question timed simulation every day for 2 weeks before the retake.
3. Review image questions separately. Traffic sign recognition and image-based scenarios (right of way, positioning) are where most people lose points.
4. Don't cram the night before. Sleep is more valuable than last-minute cramming. Stop new material 48 hours before the exam; use the final days only for review.
How Many Times Can You Retake?
Theoretically unlimited. In practice, most people pass on the second or third attempt if they study differently. The exam does not get harder with retakes — the same 7,400-question pool is used each time.
Pass with Driving Freedom
The app shows you exactly which questions you consistently get wrong and prioritises them until you get them right. The simulation mode replicates the exact Motorizzazione interface so there are no surprises.
