Patente B Exam Day: What to Expect and How to Pass

What happens on Patente B exam day in Italy โ€” arriving, the computer test format, common mistakes, and how to stay calm and pass first time.

You have studied for weeks. Exam day is approaching. Knowing exactly what to expect removes the anxiety โ€” and the practical tips in this guide have helped many foreigners pass on their first attempt.

Before Exam Day

The day before: Run one final full mock exam. Check your score. If you are consistently above 38/40, you are ready. If not, focus on your weakest topic for a few hours โ€” not the whole bank.

What to bring:

  • Your permesso di soggiorno (original, not a copy)
  • The exam convocation letter (email or printed copy) from Motorizzazione
  • A valid ID (passport or identity card)
  • Arrive 15 minutes early โ€” latecomers are often not admitted

What Happens at the Motorizzazione

You will go through a brief document check at reception. Then you will wait in a waiting area until your name is called. Groups of candidates are called in together.

You will be assigned a computer terminal. The exam is entirely on-screen โ€” you never write anything by hand.

The Exam Interface

The screen shows:

  • The question text in Italian
  • An image (if the question has one)
  • Answer options: usually True/False (Vero/Falso) or multiple choice
  • A timer showing the remaining time
  • A question counter

You can skip questions and return to them. Use this feature. If you are unsure about a question, flag it and move on โ€” return at the end.

The 40 Questions: Time Strategy

40 questions, 30 minutes = 45 seconds per question on average. In practice:

  • Easy questions (you know instantly): 10โ€“15 seconds each
  • Medium questions (need to think): 30โ€“40 seconds each
  • Hard/uncertain questions: skip, return later

Do not spend more than 60 seconds on any one question on the first pass.

Common Exam Day Mistakes

Rushing the last 10 questions โ€” Many candidates run short of time and rush the final questions, making avoidable errors. Practise with a timer so you know your natural pace.

Second-guessing correct answers โ€” If you studied well, your first instinct is usually right. Changing a correct answer to a wrong one is more common than the reverse.

Misreading image questions โ€” Take 5 extra seconds to look at every detail in diagram questions. The examiner is testing whether you see the yield sign or the speed limit sign in the background.

Panicking on unknown questions โ€” You may encounter 2โ€“3 questions that feel unfamiliar. Stay calm: you can afford 4 total errors. Focus on the ones you know.

After the Exam

Results are displayed immediately on screen. You will see either:

  • IDONEO (passed) โ€” congratulations
  • NON IDONEO (failed) โ€” you can re-register for another attempt

If you pass, the examiner will give you a temporary permit to drive while your physical licence is being processed (this takes several weeks).

Start Preparing Now

The best exam day tip is the most obvious one: start preparing early enough that exam day feels routine. The Driving Freedom app's mock exam mode simulates the real interface โ€” 40 questions, 30-minute timer, instant results.
