Patente B Documents Checklist for Foreigners in Italy

Complete documents checklist to register for Patente B in Italy as a non-EU foreigner. What you need, where to get it, and how much it costs.

Before you can register for the Patente B theory exam in Italy, you need to gather several documents. Missing even one means you cannot register โ€” and in larger cities, getting a second appointment can take weeks. Use this checklist to prepare everything at once.

The Complete Documents Checklist

1. Valid Permesso di Soggiorno (Residence Permit)

Your permesso must be valid on the date you register for the exam. An expired permesso means you cannot register.

If your permesso is being renewed: The receipt (ricevuta) of the renewal application is accepted as a temporary document. Bring the original receipt + your passport.

Where to get it: You already have it. If it's expired, renew at your local questura or post office (Ufficio Immigrazione).

2. Codice Fiscale (Tax Identification Number)

Required for all official registrations in Italy.

Where to get it: Agenzia delle Entrate office, or online at agenziaentrate.gov.it. Free, issued immediately.

3. Certificato Medico (Medical Certificate)

Certifies that you are medically fit to drive. Must be issued by an authorised doctor.

Where to get it:

  • Any private GP (medico di base) โ€” cost: โ‚ฌ50โ€“80
  • ASL (public health unit) โ€” cost: โ‚ฌ30โ€“50 (cheaper but longer wait)
  • Many autoscuole can arrange this โ€” convenient but often overpriced

What the doctor checks: vision, hearing, basic motor coordination. The appointment takes 10โ€“15 minutes.

Validity: The certificate is valid for 6 months. Get it close to your registration date.

4. Passport or ID Card

Any valid government-issued photo ID. If your passport has expired, a valid national ID card or permesso card is acceptable.

5. Two Passport Photos

Recent, colour, white background, 35ร—45mm. Available at any tabaccheria or photo shop for โ‚ฌ4โ€“8.

Where to Register

Option A โ€” Motorizzazione Civile directly (privatista route) Go in person to your local Motorizzazione Civile office with all documents. Fill out form TT/2112. Pay the theory exam fee (~โ‚ฌ40).

You can also book online at portale.mit.gov.it โ€” select "patente di guida" โ†’ "esame teoria" โ†’ "prenotazione online".

Option B โ€” Through an autoscuola The school handles the paperwork for you. Convenient but adds to the overall cost.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

โŒ Bringing an expired permesso โ€” always check the expiry date first
โŒ Getting the medical certificate too early โ€” it expires after 6 months
โŒ Wrong photo size โ€” 35ร—45mm is standard; non-standard sizes are rejected
โŒ Missing codice fiscale โ€” without it you cannot complete the registration

After Registration: Study Time

Once registered, you will wait 6โ€“12 weeks for your exam date in large cities. Use that time well. The official question bank has 7,400 questions. The most effective study method for non-Italian speakers: an app that explains each question in your own language.

Driving Freedom covers all 7,400 official questions with explanations in Farsi, Arabic, English, Urdu, Bengali, and Hindi.
