Italian Motorway Driving Guide — Autostrada Rules (2026)
Everything you need to know about driving on Italian motorways: speed limits, lane discipline, emergency procedures, tolls, and the rules tested in the Patente B exam.
Italy's motorway network (autostrada) is extensive and well-maintained — but it has its own rules and conventions that differ from urban driving. Master these for both safe travel and the Patente B exam.
Speed Limits on the Autostrada
| Vehicle type | Dry conditions | Wet conditions (rain/snow) |
|---|---|---|
| Standard car | 130 km/h | 110 km/h |
| Car with trailer | 80 km/h | 80 km/h |
| Motorhome ≤3.5t | 100 km/h | 80 km/h |
| Motorcycles | 130 km/h | 110 km/h |
New drivers (licence under 3 years OR under 21): maximum 100 km/h in all conditions.
Speed limit signs take precedence — many motorway sections have lower posted limits (80–110 km/h) due to construction, accidents, or weather systems.
Lane Discipline
Italy strictly enforces keep right unless overtaking (tenersi sulla corsia di destra):
- You must drive in the rightmost lane that is free of slow vehicles
- The left lane is for overtaking only — not cruising
- Undertaking (passing on the right) is illegal
- Police use both patrol cars and cameras to enforce lane discipline
Minimum Speed on the Autostrada
The minimum speed in the left lane is 70 km/h (you cannot block the overtaking lane by driving too slowly).
Entering and Exiting
- Accelerate on the entry ramp (rampa di accesso) to match motorway speed before merging
- Give way to traffic already on the motorway
- Signal your exit well in advance and reduce speed only after crossing to the exit lane
- Do not brake sharply on the main carriageway to take an exit
Stopping on the Autostrada
You may stop only in a genuine emergency. If you must stop:
- Pull fully onto the hard shoulder (corsia di emergenza)
- Put on hazard lights immediately
- Place the warning triangle at least 100m behind your vehicle (150m on motorways where speeds are higher)
- Put on the reflective safety vest (gilet catarifrangente) before exiting the vehicle
- Stand behind the safety barrier, not between your car and traffic
Stopping on the hard shoulder for any non-emergency reason (including using your phone) is illegal and heavily fined.
Tolls (Pedaggi)
Most Italian motorways are tolled. Payment options:
- Cash or card at manned booths
- Telepass/Viacard electronic tag (faster, dedicated lanes)
- Telepass Europe (compatible with other EU motorway networks)
Always have the correct lane: do not enter a Telepass-only lane without the device.
What the Patente B Exam Tests
Theory questions on motorways cover:
- Speed limits by vehicle type and conditions
- When to use the hard shoulder
- Minimum following distance at 130 km/h
- What signs mean (autostrada entry, exits, service areas)
- Emergency stopping procedures
