The continuous transverse line indicates the point at which drivers must stop in the presence of stop signals (red traffic light, traffic officer signaling to stop, STOP sign).
It may be supplemented by the word "STOP" painted on the road surface.
It is not true that it indicates the point at which drivers must stop at an unregulated intersection, or the point where one must always stop near a road intersection, or that it is mandatory to give way to vehicles approaching from both the right and the left (this only applies if a stop sign is present).
