ACQUAPLANING

AQUAPLANING A phenomenon involving the lifting or sliding of the wheels on a wet surface, resulting in a loss of tyre grip. It occurs when the vehicle floats on water due to insufficient drainage of water through the tyre tread patterns. It depends on the depth and design of the tyre tread. It is more likely to occur: with light vehicles; at high speeds; with heavily worn tyres, in which case it may also occur at low speeds. It is not true that it increases on carriageways with a steep lateral slope.
